Sanda round timer settings

Sanda combines striking and throwing inside a round-based contest. A timer keeps the work and break periods clear when practice moves between those actions. UFT includes a Sanda preset so a class can start with the published round pattern, then customize it for a specific drill or partner rotation.

Sanda round format

IWUF describes a sanda bout as three two-minute rounds with one-minute rest between rounds, with the winner taking two rounds. UFT schedules the full three-round sequence. Some younger categories can use shorter rounds under the competition rules, so edit the preset to match the actual event rather than assuming one clock applies to every age group.

Best of three does not always mean three rounds

A competitor who wins the first two rounds can finish the bout without a third. A fixed practice timer can still run all three rounds to give everyone the planned work time. Decide whether you want a match simulation or a class schedule. In the full preset, six minutes of work and two one-minute breaks total eight minutes before preparation.

These settings come from the app’s timer library. Rest is between work periods; the timer finishes after the last work period. Preparation is separate. Custom timers can change the count, work time and rest.

Up to three two-minute rounds with one-minute breaks. Run the full sequence for class practice, or stop after two round wins when simulating a best-of-three bout.

Choose a timer for your training

Keep the two-minute work period for integrated rounds, or create shorter custom intervals for a single striking entry or throwing setup. State the task and partner roles before the first bell. During the one-minute break, reset the starting position and review the next task. For a longer class, add blocks for technical drilling and partner rounds instead of repeating the competition sequence without a plan.

  1. Open the timer library in UFT and select Sanda.
  2. Choose the named preset that matches the session. For a different sequence, create or customize a timer in My Timers.
  3. Check the round count, work and rest. Set preparation, warnings and optional warm-up or cooldown before starting.

Sanda timer questions

How long is a sanda round?

The standard IWUF format uses two-minute rounds and one-minute breaks. Some younger categories can use shorter rounds; check the event’s category rules.

Does a sanda bout always last three rounds?

No. Sanda uses a best-of-three structure, so two round wins can decide the bout. UFT schedules three rounds as a practice template, which you can end earlier for match simulation.
